A client of ours was talking with us recently and the topic of yoga attire came up. Let me be clear from the start. Wear whatever you please and whatever pleases you. Let's be clear though, there is no need to spend a dime on yoga clothes! The yogis of old did yoga in loinclothes on rugs of animal skin. The facination with style and consumerism is not new. The modern way of life is not full of new issues in regards to the mind. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (a source text for our tradition) talks about many of the affliction to our peace of mind and although it was written thousands of years ago, it still rings true today. Patanjali clearly states that we are to be moderate and chaste (Brahmacharya the 4th priciple of the yamas). Now chaste may be an old fashion word, but consider the freedom it implies. To not be bound by some external drive to wear the latest, trendiest thing relieves the mind of so much suffering and the wallet of needless spending ($150 yoga pants?).
This is not a judgemental thing. No right or wrong. Simply, what can we do to free our minds from the endless distractions we are under? If wearing stylish yoga attire makes your mind peaceful and happy have at it. Seriously. There is just no need to do it.
By the way, please no loinclothes.
